It was not a space ship from another planet, just another time — a long since abandoned Soviet satellite. One of its booster rockets didn’t fire and it couldn’t escape Earth’s orbit. A sad reminder of the time when two powerful nations challenged each other and then boldly raced into outer space. What will be the next thing that challenges us, Toby? That makes us go farther and work harder? You know that when smallpox was eradicated, it was considered the single greatest humanitarian achievement of this century? Surely we can do it again, as we did in the time when our eyes looked towards the heavens, and with outstretched fingers we touched the face of God. In addition to provide a 28-hour impact window across a 118,000,000-square-mile danger zone, NASA is providing a 20-minute warning before the satellite strikes, more than enough time to make it to Antarctica provided that you are an Emperor Penguin. Stephen Colbert discussing the fiery descent of NASA’s defunct UARS satellite. From The Colbert Report, September 22nd, 2011.

[Flash 10 is required to watch video]

usagov:

Video description: This video shows our Sun over several weeks during a period of highly unusual solar activity.  It is comprised of images taken by a device called the Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI), which is aboard one of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s (NOAA) weather satellites.  NOAA monitors the Sun with the SXI in order to predict when solar flares may cause dangerous problems on Earth, such as communications failures and power outages.

Holy shit. I love science and space so much.

There are many Space Shuttle tribute videos, and there will be even more now that the last launch has occurred, but how many of them are narrated by William Shatner?

[T]he CIA considered no other spot on Earth to be as sensitive as Groom Lake, and the astronauts had just taken a picture of it. Dwayne A. 99942 Apophis is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a small probability (up to 2.7%) that it would strike the Earth in 2029. […] A possibility remained that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a gravitational keyhole, a precise region in space no more than about a half-mile wide,[6] that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036.

Although the Greek name for the Egyptian god may be appropriate, Tholen and Tucker — two of the co-discoverers of the asteroid — are reportedly fans of the TV series Stargate SG-1. One of the show’s persistent villains is an alien named Apophis who, on the show, gave rise to the myth of the Egyptian god.[11]

Okay, yes, this could mean the annihilation of all life on Earth … but I just cannot get over the Stargate connection.

If SETI can’t search for alien life anymore, I think I know what we need.

Space Enthralls Me

Sagittarius A* (pronounced “A-star”, standard abbreviation Sgr A*) is a bright and very compact astronomical radio source at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, near the border of the constellations Sagittarius and Scorpius. It is part of a larger astronomical feature known as Sagittarius A. Sagittarius A* is likely to be the location of a supermassive black hole, which are hypothesized to be at the centers of many spiral and elliptical galaxies.

I want to go to there.
